A New Smile - a New Beginning

by Veronica Whitter

January 2011 started the new year with the news that I had a large parotid tumour in my salivary gland and that all of my facial nerves were wrapped around the tumour.

My wonderful lady surgeon promised to save whatever facial nerves she could as the tumour had to be removed and there were no real guarantees on how “beautiful” I would look at the end of the surgery.

She was particularly concerned about my smile becoming droopy and my eye having a problem shutting.

So – I took time off from my busy Project Director role at a major health service, put my trust in the incredible hands of Dr Sheryl Wagstaff and with the love of my family and friends and an unexpected spiritual calmness -went “under the knife”.

The tumour was fortunately benign and Sheryl felt she had saved up to 90% of the facial nerves.

I had a skew smile and a partial left sided facial paralysis.

We both believed that improvements would happen over time and that the final healing was up to a bigger force than either of us.

I felt truly fine and began to focus on the true beauty that is inside each one of us, the beauty that can shine through even when our physical appearance is not really reflective of the inner spirit that lives inside the outer shell.

I learnt to smile more with my eyes – well at least with my good eye!

The first 2 months of recovery were an incredible path of self discovery.

With the help of a Physio I invented my own unique version of facial Pilates and for many hours a day, sat outside on a fit ball on our tree deck, surrounded by nature and the birds laughing at me.

I really could not say various letters of the alphabet and had a particular problem with my “p”s and “q”s.

I developed an exercise that was truly fun – trying to keep a Chukka Pop lolly in my mouth without it falling out... a funny sight indeed.

It also gave me a great excuse to try all of the different flavours.

One night I had drinks with my friend Eileen and we began to discuss “bucket lists”.

I had always wanted to do the UK Coast to Coast walk which is 310 kms of walking with about 16 000 ft of ascents and descents across the incredible English countryside.

Eileen said “let’s go” and by May 2011 we set foot on the first stage at St. Bees accompanied by another friend Maria.

Thus started an incredible journey of laughter, friendship, fun, adventure and ultimately a journey of healing.

Then a bonus – by the end of the walk my face had really improved.

The combination of a brilliant surgeon, wonderful friendships and the healing power of nature had worked its magic.

My husband of 38 years, Steve, walked in on the last day with French Champagne and crystal glasses.

He was met by 3 glorious, smiling females coming off the hills and my smile was definitely the biggest smile of all.

Now was the time to rejoice and renew- a new smile and a new beginning.

On returning home, I decided to leave my wonderful role at the health service and follow another dream – to become a Transformational Coach and NLP Practitioner in order to help others to achieve their ultimate potential in all aspects of life.

Sunrise Coaching was formed as I wanted others to RISE and SHINE and find their smile too.

My busy Construction Consultant husband decided to join Sunrise Coaching too and as a Reiki Master and qualified Masseur has now added Personal Trainer qualifications to his ever expanding personal growth.

We would love to help anyone who WANTS TO GET THEIR SMILE back into shape.

I have done it with the help of friends and I know you can too!!

Always remember that beauty is truly within each one of us and your light can smile through no matter what the physical challenges.

Our smiles are a gift and we have a compelling reason to share them.

So - If you have a smile – SMILE IT !!  Together let’s make the world a happy, smiley place.
