Like most mothers, I want to give my children the best fuel for their growing bodies that I possibly can. My mum taught me to cook from a very young age, using basic ingredients and fresh fruits and vegetables. Once I had my own children, I figured if I cooked like mum did, my family would be healthy.
Over the years, however, it became clear to me that the ‘basic ingredients’ were changing. More and more foods were being altered - genetically modified, irradiated, sprayed with pesticides, over-refined, over-processed, chemically flavoured and coloured... the list goes on! I had always struggled with food intolerances, but by the time I had my fourth child they were worse than ever, and my kids were having food reactions too.
After much research, I began to see there's a lot more to healthy eating than just cooking it yourself - although that's a good start! I realized that some foods, such as dairy, wheat and refined sugars, just didn't agree with me and were best avoided. I learnt more about the additives, preservatives and chemicals hidden in our foods, and the health problems they can cause. I started to eat a more wholefood diet, stopped having wheat and dairy, used only natural sweeteners, and avoided colours, preservatives and additives. I tried to buy organic or pesticide free as much as possible, buying in bulk to save money.
Within weeks of changing my diet, my headaches and colds were gone, my blood sugar levels stabilised, I had heaps more energy, and I finally reached a healthier weight. My Thermomix came in very handy in helping me cope with all the 'cooking from scratch' - I couldn’t do without it! I used it to grind grains and make wheat free and gluten free breads; to make my dairy free milks and creams; for juices and fresh fruit ice-creams and sorbets; for nut butters, sauces and spreads without additives; and for quick, healthy meals. It saved me time and money, so this change in diet was achievable despite having four young children and one income.
Many people are struggling with food allergies or intolerances, or are suffering from a diet lacking in nutrition, and don’t know what to do about it. My desire is to help these people learn how to cook healthy, healing foods that their whole family will enjoy. I started my blog to share my recipes, tips and meal plans with others. I love helping people get creative with their cooking, and showing them how enjoyable it can be to eat healthy, allergy friendly food.
Healthy eating doesn't have to be boring. Food intolerances and allergies don't have to make life difficult. My aim with ‘Quirky Cooking’ is to open people’s eyes to the possibility of wholesome food that tastes great; is easy and fun to make; and meets the needs of those with diet challenges.
