The Great Aussie Outdoors Takes A Stylish Step Inside

Land2Lounge introduces handcrafted timber home-wares with timeless appeal

Unique, old logs, tree stumps and reclaimed timbers are finding a new home thanks to Land2Lounge, a flourishing, creative export from the Mornington Peninsula.

Evolving the natural beauty of Australian timbers and bringing them in, to everyday living spaces, has been a passion for designer Andrea Donaldson who has been enjoying overwhelming success since introducing her label earlier this year.

Distinctly handcrafted pieces, as functional as they are artistically styled, include chunky box stools, trunk side tables, box candle holders and the signature dash mirror - pieces displaying refined simplicity and organically textured surfaces with beautiful finishes, hand rubbed and polished to perfection.

The recycled timber has been collected from neighbouring farms by her father who has spent a lifetime salvaging old trees, otherwise destined for firewood, and stored them at the Donaldson family timber mill.

Donaldson takes special pride in bringing the timbers back to life, expertly crafting them to reveal their natural grains and colours while adding her cool creative style to the warm earthy pieces.

“I want to create relaxed alternatives to the classic designs, without using plantation timbers and still keeping it all 100% Australian made,” says Donaldson.

“Living by example is an extension of being a role model for my children, I want the business to be based on sound principles, sustainability and a home-grown passion for the local environment.  I’d like them to understand that what we do now, impacts on our future.

Taking on the role of single parent with two young girls, Donaldson struggled to find work that suited her children’s schooling and activity timetables and, finding herself in a position with nothing to lose, Land2Lounge was born.

“Suddenly all the pieces came together, all my strengths added up and directed me to starting the business, “ says Donaldson whose natural affinity with interior styling and photography was honed during her career as an international model – all the photography is by Donaldson, with thanks to her self timing camera.

“My style has slowly evolved, garnered by years spent at my retired parent’s hobby timber mill. I’ve always dabbled in creating home-wares as a form of relaxation,” says Donaldson who has filled the homes of friends and family with her original pieces.

“Throw in a few power tools and I feel completely at home!!  I’m fascinated by timber and the many natural products that can be sourced ethically from the land and really enjoy developing the natural symmetry, scale and form of pieces around me,” says Donaldson.

The materials find her – wattles, gums, blackwood and even the macrocarpa Cyprus – a durable, lighter timber that lends itself to many uses - originally introduced by the government for farm windbreaks in the early 1930’s, now being removed in favour of native alternatives.

Donaldson’s love and respect of the outdoors separates her designs from the mainstream and each piece is unique, worked carefully to bring out its natural qualities with privately commissioned pieces also available.

“Even the designs on the candleholders are burnt on freehand, making no two pieces alike,” says Donaldson.

“I’m intrigued by the way the timber colours vary, dependent on the location they come from.  The natural oils and varnishes we use really bring out the originality of each piece,” she says.

The collection has been enthusiastically received by the market, which has prompted Donaldson to extend the range using skins, leather and stone pieces, currently at design stage and anticipated to be ready for purchase early next year.
