Throughout a women’s life, hormones play a key role as to whether you wake up feeling like an empowered goddess, or would rather stay in bed all day with some tissues and a box of chocolates.
There are many hormone conditions which may affect a women’s health including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), period pain, fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), amenorrhea, menopause, the list goes on.
These conditions can be managed successfully using Naturopathic medicine. Following a healthy diet in combination with supplements, herbs, homoeopathic medicines, exercise and meditation can prove a powerful concoction for optimum hormonal wellness.
Maintaining hormone equilibrium is about balance on all levels – physically, mentally and emotionally.
On a physical level, healthy eating is essential for healthy hormone balance. A nourishing diet should consist of an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, lean quality protein (red meat, organic poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, tempeh, nuts etc) and good fats from oily fish, coconut oil, flaxseed oil, avocados, nuts and seeds.
Avoid sugary foods, fatty foods and processed foods. Too much sugar over time can cause insulin resistance which can lead to conditions such as weight gain and PCOS.
Spend time examining your current diet. What changes can you make? Indulging in refined, unhealthy carbohydrates can cause cravings, mood swings, low energy, digestive problems and weight gain.
Once you've discovered areas where your diet can improve, start planning on how you can make delicious, healthy substitutions. You will find it's actually easy to make these changes and the positive impact it will have on your hormone health will be significant.
On a mental level, stress can trigger hormonal imbalances. Recent studies have shown women with conditions such as PCOS are prone to physically reacting to stress, making it all the more important to find a way to manage it.
A cluttered mind creates a cluttered environment. Take time to ‘spring clean’ your home, office, kitchen pantry etc. Don’t be ashamed to seek counselling if you feel overwhelmed with life.
On an emotional level, nourish your soul as well. Meditate/pray daily – even if it’s just 5 minutes a day. Meditation is an ideal way to lower your stress levels. It returns the body to a peaceful, calm state allowing a healing environment for the goddess within you to rise again!
