Pleasure Is The Missing Piece by Kylie Patchett
When we think about wellness, we often think of the obvious indicators like nutrition and exercise, but this is just not the whole picture. I am sure every one of us knows a super fit, whole food eating person who also has relationship troubles or struggles to find work that lines up with her passion. Is she really healthy?
Food and exercise are just a little part of the whole picture. Holistic Health is really about the whole picture of your health, every interaction, every thought, every relationship. What you do with your time, what you do for work and what goes on between your two ears.
The Tall Poppy Project coaches people through achieving their own version of Holistic Health using the backbone of 7 Rituals of Radical Self Respect: Purpose, Prosperity, Plate, Power, Pause, Pleasure and People. And one of the most undervalued of all Human experiences has become Pleasure.
Think about it, when was the last time you really fully immersed yourself in Pleasure? We live so much on the surface of life that it is becoming easier and easier not to dive deep.
Perhaps this is because our crazy paced 24/7 lifestyle encourages an over-emphasis on the masculine traits of doing and achieving and neglects the feminine traits of taking time out, being receptive and creative. Whatever the reason we are drowning for the lack of pure pleasure in our lives. Indeed, pleasure should be one of our main daily drivers, a non-negotiable. Not something that comes at the end of the to do list after all the work, duty and responsibility are done.
What gives you pleasure? It can be anything that gives you joy, that fills you up. My personal favourites are enjoying a cup of tea in the sun, walking on the beach, playing in the pool with my girls, getting up early to enjoy 30minutes of uninterrupted meditation + dreaming time then watching the sun come up. Slow sensual soul-humming sex with my man. A meal cooked with whole foods and lots of love, savoured over our favourite bottle of a wine. Candles, a bath tub, a good book and me.
It can be anything big or small, that gives you pleasure. Anything that gives your joy, makes you smile on the inside. Taking pleasure. Receiving pleasure. Giving pleasure. It is the endorphin-loaded currency of a fulfilled life, a life well-lived that feels like your soul is wagging its tail.
This week, become fully aware of how you are feeling in any given moment. Take stock of the noise between you ears, listen to how your soul is feeling. Make space for pleasure in your life. Create a pleasure menu for yourself which includes all sorts of pleasurable activities, sights, sounds, places – simple 5 minute things to whole weekends of deliciousness. Every day for at least one week, select one thing from your pleasure menu and do it! Fully immerse yourself in all pleasurable sensations – notice how you feel before and after, how your body feels, how your soul feels.
Store that deliciousness up – its like recharging your soul’s batteries – essential for you to stand tall and stake a claim on a delicious life.
