The Modern Mother’s Challenge

By Kate Weiss, Founder, Table of Plenty

As the roles of women in modern society continue to evolve, one constant remains – the role of a woman as a mother.

Our busy lives, executive jobs and our innate ability to juggle any number of tasks at once does not deter us from our role as mum – arguably the most important job of all.

Modern times means mums must be all things to all people at all times – the ability to prioritise is essential and a top priority for most mothers is to ensure a nutritious, delicious meal is provided to her family each night. In this day and age – juggling responsibilities and racing the clock – is it possible?

The birth of my first child, Amy, in October 2000 was to be the turning point for so many factors in my life and a journey that truly tested my strength and optimism and challenged me to assess what was most important in my life and how I could balance a family, a career and a passion for good, healthy food.

Amy was born prematurely – she was tiny, yet surprisingly strong, with an unmistakable will to survive from the very first moment.

It took five years for doctors to provide Amy’s diagnosis – a rare genetic disorder called Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome.

Maintaining the belief that ‘a mother’s love can heal all’ I juggled an executive position in an international IT company with the demands of a special needs child – when it became clear that I could not do the job well and be the mother that I wanted to be, I resigned from my job and found myself at home with Amy fulltime.

With a creative nature and a deep seeded passion for food and healthy eating, the idea to create my own business was born – the mission was, and still is, to create food products that will help women to navigate their busy lives and be able to put a decent healthy meal on the table.

It is essential that mothers have access to quality, healthy ingredients that are tasty and simple to prepare – but with so many mixed messages about what’s healthy and what’s not, blatant claims and any number of industry buzz words flying about the supermarket – mothers also need to trust the brands that they are buying.

Table of Plenty reflects a passion for food and flavours – a culmination of experience and knowledge and a vision to be shared by many.

It is a fusion of flavours and a personal interpretation of the unique cuisine of numerous cultures – a journey through food exploration and discovery.

Customers are invited to be inspired by the opportunity that we all have – to benefit from this table of plenty.

Being a creative and savvy mother when it comes to food means doing your own research – talking to friends and family, sharing ideas and recipes and experimenting to find out what works for you and your family.

Be smart about the choices you make when it comes to food and remember that the habits and traditions you instil on your children now will likely be carried through their own adult life.
