The Pole Perception - Are you a Miss Fit?

Pole dancing – the words conjure up images of neon signs, dark clubs and Demi Moore. Thanks to ‘Striptease’ and some salacious stereotypes, pole dancing does have a bit of a reputation.

We blame the 80s.

However, in 2012, pole dancing has kicked Zumba out of the dance studio. As a professional sport, pole dancing offers women an alternative to the gym and a far more entertaining use of time than the cross-trainer. As the women at Miss Fit Dance Studio in Sydney can agree, this is a damn hard work out.

Holding one’s body upside down on a pole certainly requires some serious strength and this is only one of the many physical benefits achieved through pole dancing. Increased muscle tone in the legs, arms and core, improved cardio fitness and weight loss (not to mention the happy kick of endorphins) leaves Miss Fit’s pole-dancing participants feeing both physically and emotionally empowered. Because at Miss Fit, pole-dancing is much more than just exercise.

For these every day women – whether wives, mothers, aunts or sisters – a class at Miss Fit boosts self-esteem and creates positive body image perception.

“There is a strong bond and camaraderie within the class groups,” says Miss Fit founder, Sarah Thompson. “It’s a supportive, non-competitive environment where students can improve their body image and confidence. It’s empowering for them when they achieve moves and lifts that they never thought they could and they begin to see their body tone up and look beautiful on the pole.”

Even if you don’t have any dance experience (or you’re a little uncoordinated), Miss Fit tailor their classes to suit your ability. A term of classes lasts 8 weeks and students learn at their experience level. A 1 Star class teaches you the basics over the term, through to 4 Star Advanced which is more complex work.  At the end of the eight weeks, Miss Fit celebrate the student’s progress with Graduation Night – an optional performance in front of family and friends. There aren’t many gyms out there that will toast to your achievements with a glass of bubbles.

“The students are excited to come to the classes each week,” Sarah says. “It’s something to look forward to for them. It is a healthy addiction which has become life changing for many of us.”

Demi Moore – eat your heart out.
