What To Do When You Can’t Shut Off From Work.
You have probably been there many times. You know you should be getting on with other things but your mind just won’t let that issue from work alone. It niggles away at you and it is starting to get in the way of your personal or family time. It can even become a topic of conversation with your friends and family.

This kind of scenario is common with men and women struggling with work life balance issues and it doesn’t help with the advanced communication technology we have at our disposal. There is scarcely a place we can go where our mobile phones can’t be reached.
So what are you going to do? Here are some tips.
- Take charge of how, where and when you can be contacted. Unless you are on call and lives are at stake, get a bigger perspective on life. Do you enjoy being a puppet on a string that anyone can jerk around? If you don’t control how you are contacted outside of work hours then others will control you. Message banks can take care of calls and you can screen what you think is urgent.
- Plan in some ‘me only time’. You may know the term ‘white space’ – it means all the white space around text. It makes is easier for us to read. Look at a book written 50 or more years and compare it with a book published recently. Notice how much easier it is to read when there is space between paragraphs, shorter sentences, extra blank lines etc. That same concept of white space can be applied to your life. It gives you space to breathe; otherwise you will get smothered by a lack of time between breaths or appointments. Your body and brain need the white space and if you don’t have any, stress increases and productivity decreases. You will feel it in your body, aches pains, colds, flu or worse. If you cheat your body it will make you pay – sooner or later. Sadly when payback comes later, it is frequently serious.
- Learn how to switch hats in an instant. We all have various roles in life; spouse, parent, lover, friend, neighbour, colleague, boss, employee etc. Imagine each requires a different hat and that you can switch hats at will. It’s nothing new; you’ve done it all your life. It is just that now you are taking charge of your internal process. When you take charge of where you send your mind, you take charge of ‘being at work’ or ‘being at home’. It develops the core life skill of ‘living in the present’. Yes, it does take practice and it’s so worth the effort!
The demands of career and family are growing and aren’t likely to ease up so it’s up to you to decide where your priorities lie…and stay true to them. The bottom line…it is your life!
